Insects either directly or indirectly provide us with food and other necessities we may have in life. Plant crops and feed crops would collapse without the insect’s help in pollination. Many vegetables and most fruits that we consume exist because of insect pollination. Giving us the fact that life, as we know it, will never exist in this planet without the aid of this magnificent creatures.

History can tell that we as humans have spent a great deal of its time for the war against these tiny creatures even so giving them the name ‘pests’. Even though only a small percentage of insects are considered pests, they continually threaten the world’s food supply. In many parts of the world, far more of our crops end up in the mouths of insects than in our own. Our modern, high-tech farms—on which a single crop is grown over vast expanses of land (called monocultures) make the situation worse by providing virtually unlimited resources to expanding insect populations.

Some insects have even been responsible for bringing dreaded diseases, which through the ages have killed large portions of the human race. During the fourteenth century, fleas helped spread a plague that killed 25 million people through out Europe—25% of Europe’s population. Malaria, yellow fever, and dengue fever are spread by mosquitoes, and sleeping fever is spread by the tsetse fly. These and many other scourges are often ignored in more developed nations but still devastate less developed regions of the world.

Through our never ending battle to conquer these insects’ enemies, synthetic pesticides have become our primary weapon on the field of combat. We ourselves have caused our planet contamination with has even reached not only our homes but also in plants and other animals that we consume, water that we drink, and even reported mother’s breast milk. The numbers of our enemy insects have baffled both scientists and farmers for the best ways to control them.
